Ryden Pro Bike Tool

The Ryden Pro Bike Tool is a portable bike-fit measurement system that uses a free companion smartphone app to capture saddle and handlebar X-Y positions for accurate setup and transfer between bikes. Lightweight, packable, and made in the USA.

Benefits

The Ryden Pro Bike Tool uses a single tool to locate the saddle center, measure the distance from the bottom bracket (BB) to the saddle center, and BB to the handlebar center. The smartphone application then measures the angle of the tool and uses this to calculate the important Handlebar X/Y dimensions used by the majority of bike fit professionals. The tool also allows easy measurement of the rider's hand position (grip position on the hoods).

One of the key challenges when replicating a desired setup is consistently finding the center of the saddle. This is important as setting the saddle ‘set back’, or ‘X’ position, is one of the most important and frequently overlooked considerations. The saddle ‘X’ position, combined with its height, determines your balance on the bike, and if incorrect, can result in too much weight being placed on the bars, which on long rides can lead to problems with the hands, shoulders, neck, etc.

The Ryden Pro Bike Tool is composed of a 1 meter aluminum measurement beam and a selection of 3D printed parts for measurement reference from the crank center to the saddle and handlebars.

A smartphone or digital level is required for angle measurements to fully utilize the measurement system.

How Does it Compare to the Other Bike Measurement Tools?

Good question.  Similar but different to both the Fit Stick and the VeloAngle. The Ryden Bike Tool is closer to the VeloAngle than the Fit Stick.

Both the Ryden and the VeloAngle use polar measurements  (length + angle) to determine saddle and handlebar XY measurements, so an app is required to calculate the conversion.

Fit Stick: Pros: faster, direct saddle to bar drop; pedal to saddle height, no app needed. Cons: No XY measurements.

VeloAngle: Pros: more robust, better precision, more features in the webapp. Cons: paid app, spendier tool, a bit more time consuming.

1. All movable components feature thumb screws to secure the position for more accurate measurements.  Loosen to slide.  Tighten to hold.

Background

Since having his first professional bike fit, Darren Ryden was always frustrated by the complexity of setting a bike up to the desired rider’s position. In his search to make setup easier, Darren developed a tool which combines the simplicity of a lightweight measuring device, with the sophisticated capabilities of the latest smartphones to calculate all of the important cycle fit measurements. After all, he is an engineer at Google.  Following the success of the original tool, the Pro version has been built to withstand the demands of daily use by pro mechanics and professional bike fitters. The design has incorporated all of the feedback from many professional and non-professional customers and has been through over 130 testing iterations since the standard V6. The V6 has now been phased out, due to the Pro version being the preferred choice of cycling enthusiasts as well as pro fitters.
